For tips on how to use this effectively, see these discussion thread on the GOONS, Listowners, and SOG-UK Rootsweb mailing lists.
Two examples:
1. You can exclude results from a particular mailing list (such as one that you already read regularly) by adding the search term
-path:listName
If there are hyphens in the list name (SOG-UK, for example) then enclose it in quotation marks.
2. You can exclude results that you posted yourself by adding the search term
-from:yourUserName@yourISP.com
